HIV and NCD
At the recent AIDS Conference held in Washington DC some sessions were help on Non Communicable Diseases among People living with HIV (PLWHIV). With the use of ARTs we find that PLWHIV have their own set of NCD that is a cause of concern- malignancies of many kinds being one of them. Of course, with the increasing length of survival in this group there is also an issue of NCDs in this population. Any thoughts on how this should be approached?

There is one study being conducted by one my best colleagues here in Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) -Dr. Okello Samson- and is likely to yield interesting results. He is looking at Peripheral Arterial Disease among Diabetic patients in Outpatient clinic at MUST Hospital. Ofcourse, People Living with HIV/AIDS are not excluded. Following the results from this study would provide a way to tackle this problem I guess.

Since there is need to focus on advocacy,communication and social mobilization for NCDs, Am a public health advocate and its clear that HIV/AIDS is one of the triggers leading to NCDs. There is need for an integrated comprehensive information package that would look at NCDs and HIV/AIDS, here developing a collaborative communications strategy is pertinent.
