Sandeep Kishore (YPCDN founder) speaks at TEDMED on the need to reform medical education

NCDs like heart disease, cancer and diabetes are growing threats - even in developing countries. Harvard med student and YPCDN founder (the parent to NCD Action Network) Sandeep Kishore says its time to revoke the false dichotomy between medicine and public health. Doctors should learn more about the 'causes of the causes', the social determinants of health. He calls on med students to 'rise-up' and drive change in their education curricula to include these components, to change the '100-year old' antiquated model of medical education.

Great talk. Considering I went to the UK medical school whose head of epidemiology practically invited this concept of 'social determinants', it remains very hard to get this to seep down to the medical students! http://eprints.ucl.ac.uk/676/1/Microsoft_Word_-_MM_Lancet_365_1099_...

Public Health simply does not have the 'x' factor compared to say cardiac surgery and career pathways in global public health are non-existent. I certainly have given similar talks to medical students, and the interest at the end is immense - it's just hard to follow it up. It needs greater incentives, and that ultimately means there has to be jobs/training programmes in it. Relying on 'altruism' and peoples' consciences is not going to work.
